Nick Kyrgios censured the Australian government through a controversial post that drew comparisons between a mass shooter and Novak Djokovic. The mass shooter, 24-year-old Naveed Akram, was shot by the police and was hospitalized.

He and his father, 50-year-old Sajid Akram, fired shots at a Jewish crowd gathered in Sydney’s Bondi Beach to celebrate the festival of Hanukkah on Sunday (December 14). Sajid died at the scene. The duo killed around 16 people, including a 10-year-old girl, and about 40 people were injured.

Tennis players next year will start flocking to Australia to kick-start their 2026 campaign. The country is the home to the season’s first Grand Slam event, the Australian Open, where World No.4 Jannik Sinner will be bidding to complete a three-peat.

WTA World No.4 Amanda Anisimova condemned the mass attack and wrote a condolence message. Local man Kyrgios also reacted to the incident.

He took to X to repost Andrew Bogut‘s post. Bogut, who is the assistant coach of the Sydney Kings of the National Basketball League (NBA), retweeted a now-viral post that criticized the Australian government for deporting Djokovic but not the shooter.

Back in 2022, Djokovic failed to meet Australia’s strict vaccination requirements to enter the country during the COVID-19 pandemic and was eventually deported. Earlier this year, he revealed that he experienced “trauma” while entering Melbourne.

Kyrgios, who had criticized Djokovic a lot in the past, stood up for him during the vaccination drama, condemning his government’s treatment of one of the greatest athletes of all time, and this started their friendship. The Aussie ace also partnered with the Serb in the Brisbane International doubles event.

Kyrgios made his comeback to the tour after 18 months in Brisbane and ended up featuring in just five tournaments this year. The 30-year-old registered just one match win- at the Miami Open, defeating Mackenzie McDonald in the first round, before playing his last singles match of the season against Karen Khachanov in the second round of the same tournament. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist was last seen in action in doubles at the Citi Open, where he teamed up with France’s Gael Monfils.

Roger Rasheed slams Aryna Sabalenka-Nick Kyrgios Battle of the Sexes match

Nick Kyrgios will lock horns with Aryna Sabalenka in the Battle of the Sexes on December 28 in Dubai. The match has drawn a lot of criticism from former players who can’t understand the need for such a match at this time. Former World No.1 Lleyton Hewitt‘s former coach, Roger Rasheed, also questioned what Sabalenka would gain from the match.

I’m not a fan of it, to be honest. I think it’s a lose-lose for the women’s side. I actually think it’s quite insulting, to be perfectly honest. I don’t see where there’s one minute, one second of win for he number one player in the world. If you are looking after Sabalenka commercially, is this a place where you want to be?

Roger Rasheed told ABC SPORT

Sabalenka also recently met Kyrgios in mixed doubles at the Gardens Cup exhibition event. The pair of Sabalenka and Ben Shelton defeated the pair of Kyrgios and Naomi Osaka. It’s the Japanese ace’s agency, Evolve, that will organize the Battle of the Sexes.

Sabalenka finished the season with four titles from nine finals, one of which was the US Open. She also won the Madrid Open and the Miami Open. She also ended the season as the World No.1. Apart from the US Open, the four-time Grand Slam singles champion also reached the final of the Australian Open and the French Open, losing both to Madison Keys and Coco Gauff, respectively.
