Nick Kyrgios has shared whether he will feature at the 2026 Australian Open after being largely inactive during the 2025 ATP season. The Australian star has featured in just five tour-level tournaments this season and has never reached the round of 16 of any of them amid injury struggles on tour.

Kyrgios opened his 2025 season alongside Novak Djokovic in the doubles category of the Brisbane International, but the duo managed to win just one match before crashing out. However, he failed to win one singles match at the tournament before entering the Australian Open, which marked his first Grand Slam appearance since 2022.

Kyrgios crashed out of the singles tournament at the Australian Open after losing in straight sets to British star Jacob Fearnley in the first round. He also competed in the doubles category of the competition alongside his fellow compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis, with whom he clinched the 2022 Australian Open doubles title.

The two exited the competition in the first round, with Kyrgios retiring due to an injury. The 30-year-old then went on to feature at the Indian Wells and Miami Open, but suffered early exits at both tournaments. He was sidelined until July with both wrist and shoulder injuries and returned during the Washington Open, but another setback forced him to withdraw from the US Open.

Kyrgios has not been on the court since then, and there are rumors he might be planning to retire. But during an episode of the Unscripted podcast, Kyrgios shared an update about his fitness and revealed whether he will feature at the 2026 Australian Open:

I’m training pretty much every day and playing. The schedule’s nearly done, tournament-wise, but there are a couple of events that I’m preparing for. I do know that I’m getting to the end of my tennis career now, especially with all these injuries, like I can’t do another surgery where it’s like you’re out for another six to nine months. You don’t want to get to a point where you want to start hating your profession or what you do. Yeah, I’ll probably play the Aussie Open in some way.

Kyrgios has not played any competitive singles match in months, but has often been in the news headlines due to controversial comments on podcasts and on social media. The former World No.13 became famous earlier this year after slamming the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for agreeing to give Jannik Sinner only three months’ suspension for doping.

Nick Kyrgios has had to deal with several injuries in his career, particularly wrist injuries. He has undergone an operation on it, but it has not allowed him to play effectively on the court. After reaching the 2022 US Open, the same year he reached the final of the Wimbledon Championship, he did not play a Grand Slam tournament until the 2025 Australian Open.

Kyrgios was asked during the aforementioned interview whether the 2026 season would be his last on tour. The Aussie star revealed that he doesn’t know yet if that will happen, but his body will decide if he will continue to compete on tour or not:

I don’t know yet, like, I’m to the point where my body is… It’s just hard because I know what it takes to be at that level, and whether or not you can string those days together. That’s what’s tough.

Kyrgios has played just five singles matches in the 2025 ATP season, winning only one of them. The 30-year-old’s career has not been the same after he tore a ligament in his wrist in 2023, which required surgery and subsequently kept him out for a year and a half. He revealed after the Indian Wells Masters that his wrist has been one of his biggest career challenges. It will only take determination for him to return to the court.
