Nick Kyrgios couldn’t deal with the criticism the Battle of the Sexes has been receiving. On December 28 in Dubai, Kyrgios will lock horns with women’s World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka.
Critics are branding this exhibition match as nothing but simply a man versus woman clash, claiming it serves no purpose, unlike the second edition of the era-defining Battle of the Sexes, which was played between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs for a social cause. King beat Riggs in three sets, and the match played a huge role in putting women’s tennis on the map.
King wants Sabalenka to win the match, but even she is not a fan of the exhibition, saying her match versus Riggs was political. Former player from Britain, Tim Henman, called the match “ridiculous”, saying it wouldn’t benefit women’s tennis. Serena Williams‘ former coach, Rennae Stubbs, said the event is more about money than tennis.
The match is expected to serve the simple purpose of entertainment, but if Sabalenka loses, critics are convinced, misogynistic people would start belittling women’s tennis.
By the way, all the negative comments towards the Battle of the Sexes are doing nothing but giving it more attention. At the end of the day, Aryna will go down as one of the greatest players to play this game. I will have entertained crowds around the world. We are two humans that are good friends who want to put on a show and get more eyes on tennis.

Kyrgios recently clashed with Sabalenka- the match, however, was in mixed doubles, at the Gardens Cup exhibition event in New York City. The pair of Sabalenka and Ben Shelton beat the team of Kyrgios and Naomi Osaka.
Not all this other stuff – does this not look like tennis is going in the right direction? Sit back and enjoy the show.We both love the challenge and are going into this with no real experience. No one cares what you have to say.
Nick Kyrgios added
Kyrgios, in official tournaments, featured in just five official events this year. After making his comeback at the Brisbane International following his 18-month injury hiatus, the 30-year-old registered just one match win, in the first round of the Miami Open. His last official match of the season was in doubles in the first round of the Citi Open, where he played alongside Gael Monfils.

Aryna Sabalenka says the Battle of the Sexes won’t damage women’s tennis
Aryna Sabalenka is convinced that her match at the Battle of the Sexes against Nick Kyrgios will be highly entertaining. During her interview with the BBC, the four-time singles Grand Slam champion assured the critics that the match intends to only elevate women’s tennis, irrespective of the result.

I don’t agree. I am not putting myself at any risk. We’re there to have fun and bring great tennis. Whoever wins, wins. It’s so obvious that the man is biologically stronger than the woman, but it’s not about that. This event is only going to help bring women’s tennis to a higher level.
Many accuse Kyrgios of misogyny, as back in 2021, he admitted to assaulting his ex-girlfriend. Last year, he made “second serve” comment toward WTA player and ex-girlfriend Anna Kalinskaya, who at that time was dating men’s World No.2 Jannik Sinner.
The Aussie, back in 2015, made an inappropriate comment about Donna Vekic. Kyrgios also shared an interview of the self-proclaimed misogynist Andrew Tate, and later claimed that after knowing all about the social media influencer, he had “gone to all lengths to distance” himself.
