Taylor Fritz secured his place in the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon Championship after Jordan Thompson retired from the match due to injury. The 27-year-old now has reached the last eight of Wimbledon thrice in the last four years.
However, Fritz has had to suffer to get to the fourth round of the Championship. In fact, he spent nine hours and 43 minutes on the court contending with big-serving players early in the draw. He first had to overcome Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in five sets and did the same over Canadian Gabriel Diallo.
Also, against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, he had to toil to prevail over the Spaniard in five sets. But in the round of 16, he looked sharp as though he had not spent over nine hours on the court. He looked confident with his game and needed less than half an hour to claim the first set against Thompson.
The Australian was struggling with severe back pain and had a heavy strapping on his right leg during the match. The back issue grew worse in the third set and he decided to retire, as Fritz led him 6-1, 3-0 in forty minutes. The win now guarantees Fritz a quarter-finals spot for the second consecutive time at Wimbledon.
Nick Kyrgios, who was axed from the BBC panel for Wimbledon but got a job on talkSPORT, revealed during their show that Fritz has a good shot to reach the latter rounds of the tournament. However, the former World No.13 revealed that the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are still above him at the All England Club:
The way Fritz has been playing you would probably say it’s one of the hardest draws a seed has had. He played Perricard, then Diallo and now Davidovich-Fokina as well. Those are three guys who are very dangerous on grass, and Fritz has come through, and he is saying his body is feeling better and better…Djokovic looked incredible against Dan Evans as well. But the way Sinner and Alcaraz are playing and dialed in, it’s pretty tough to go through those guys.
Fritz reached the quarter-finals last year after beating Alexander Zverev in five sets but went on to crash out of the tournament after losing to Lorenzo Musetti. He now has a chance of getting past the last eight stage when he faces Russia’s Karen Khachanov, as he’s the favorite to claim the victory.
Taylor Fritz not happy with the way his fourth-round match at Wimbledon ended
Taylor Fritz arrived at Wimbledon in the best form of the season as he won the Stuttgart Open and the Eastbourne Open. The American star had not won any title since the start of the season and had struggled during the clay-court season. But on grass, he found his form and peaked at the right time, just ahead of the SW19.

After Jordan Thompson retired from their match in the fourth round, the American star was not happy with the way it ended. The 27-year-old pointed out that Thompson had been competing in the doubles and singles at Wimbledon:
It is not the way I want to go through. I was really excited to play Jordan today. I was excited to play some good tennis and it is just sad. He has been battling. He has been playing five setters. He was out playing a long doubles match yesterday, so he has been battling out here and respect to him for coming out. His body is not right, so I feel bad for him and hope he feels better.
Fritz will now take on Karen Khachanov, whom he has never beaten in his career. The American has lost their last two meetings, but those came in 2019 and 2020. Both players have apparently gained more experience since then, which will make their clash an interesting one.
