Nick Kyrgios has finally made his much-awaited comeback at the Brisbane International. After playing doubles with Novak Djokovic, Kyrgios returned to the court for singles on Tuesday (December 31).
As expected, Kyrgios gave his all during the match. It was his first match in nearly two years but in spite of that, it took Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard more than two hours to beat the Aussie with a scoreline of 7-6(2), 6-7(4), 7-6(3).
During the match, however, the 29-year-old suffered wrist pain and even took a medical timeout. After the defeat, Kyrgios expressed his doubt over his participation at the Australian Open, saying he would need a ‘miracle’ to play a Grand Slam tournament. Kyrgios, who underwent surgery on his wrist said his surgeon had warned him never to play tennis again.
Well, I mean, look, I’ve got six holes in my hand like I’ve got six holes in my hand and one in my arm. Yeah, not one tennis player has ever had this surgery and come back and tried to play again. It’s all really an experimental kind of, the surgeon, like, yeah, if you ever go back and play at this level again, it’s on you guys. I don’t really have any protocol of how it’s going to be or how it’s going to pull up.
Nick Kyrgios said at the press conference
The 2025 Australian Open is scheduled to start on January 12. Kyrgios, who played his first Grand Slam singles final at the 2022 Wimbledon, has never reached the semifinals in Melbourne.
