Rafael Nadal’s retirement announcement on October 10 was the biggest headline in sports this year. Many legends and players from all over the world paid tribute to the Spaniard.

Andy Murray, who retired in August, did not get the same amount of praise Nadal received. This has led Nick Kyrgios to state that the Brit crawled to the finishing line.

Murray and Nadal experienced almost the same decline in their game after suffering several injuries in their careers. Nevertheless, the former’s decline was more significant and began in 2019, while the latter has only struggled since last year.

Murray ended Britain’s 77-year wait for a Wimbledon men’s singles champion after claiming the title in 2013. He helped Great Britain win the 2015 Davis Cup and played his final match at the Paris Olympics, where he partnered with compatriot Dan Evans.

On the other hand, Nadal will play his final match at the Davis Cup Finals in November. On an appearance on The Louis Theroux Podcast, Kyrgios confessed that Murray did not receive the kind of retirement sendoff he deserved.

I look at how Andy Murray’s doing it (retirement) now, and how Rafael [Nadal] is going out, I don’t want to be like that either, I don’t want to be kind of crawling to the finish line in a sense. What Andy Murray’s achieved in this sport is second to basically no one, like, unless you’re Novak, Federer, or Nadal. Like, the next person is Andy Murray. You deserve to go out a little bit more gracefully than he’s done. That the surgeries, the pain, it’s just not worth it.

Meanwhile, Nadal has been away from competitive events since the Paris Olympics. He recently featured in the Six Kings Slam exhibition tournament, where he finished fourth and pocketed $1.5 million in prize money.

Nick Kyrgios opens up about his mental struggles in 2019

Nick Kyrgios has opened up about his drinking problem during a turbulent year in his career. He revealed that the reason for that was because of his mental health struggles, which reached a boiling point at the 2019 Wimbledon.

The Australian won his first-round match but met Rafael Nadal in the second round. He would go on to lose the match in four sets. In the aforementioned podcast, the Australian admitted that he was having about 20 to 30 drinks in the night.

I was just playing and playing and playing and kind of dealing with everything. And it was a dark time. Like I was drinking, and I was spiraling out of control, and I was continuing to play and travel. [I would have] 20 or 30 drinks [a night]. Easy. I’d drink like a fish. But then just wake up and play Nadal the next day, give him a good run for his money.

Kyrgios has announced he will return to the court in 2025 after over a year away. He last competed on the ATP Tour in June 2023 and has since struggled with wrist, knee, and foot problems.
