Nick Kyrgios was excited to be back on the tour after a long injury layoff but was eliminated in the first round at the Brisbane International by youngster Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in three sets which also included three tiebreaks.

Some fans, particularly those who slammed him for his controversial remarks on Jannik Sinner‘s doping case, seized the opportunity to mock him heavily. Kyrgios has now responded to the criticism during his Q&A session on Instagram when a fan wrote about how even Frances Tiafoe lost to Perricard. The Aussie referenced basketball legend LeBron James‘ quote to slam his critics.

People are idiots. They have no idea and always have plenty of opinions. We are some of the best athletes in the world, as bron said they gotta wake up and have the same lives they had yesterday. We continue to live the way we want.

Last year at the Australian Open, Kyrgios, who was on the sidelines due to injury problems, took up the role of a commentator for Eurosport and ESPN. Renowned sports journalist Jon Wertheim took to X to announce that Kyrgios will be missing from ESPN’s commentary team for the 2025 Australian Open.

Read into this what you will, but Nick Kyrgios will not be part of the ESPN @AustralianOpen 2025 broadcast team.

When Kyrgios noticed the tweet, he criticized Wertheim by stating the reason behind his not joining the broadcast team.

Uhhhh because I’m playing singles and doubles – slow media day huh.
