Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has not played a Tour-level match in more than 16 months. However, the 29-year-old is determined to make a comeback and win a Grand Slam title to “shut people up.” In fact, the former Wimbledon finalist has only played one Tour-level match since November 2022 due to several injuries.

The last time Kyrgios competed on the ATP Tour, he was defeated by Yibing Wu in straight sets. Since then, he has sat on the sidelines due to issues with his wrist and knee. He used this time to work as a tennis pundit and commentator. Kyrgios also ran a talk show called Good Trouble.

Having recovered fully, Kyrgios intends to make a comeback. He has announced that he will be playing at the World Tennis League event in December ahead of his planned return at the start of next year. On top of that, Kyrgios has declared that he is coming back intending to win a Grand Slam title.

I have beaten pretty much every person that has been put in front of me, made a final of a Grand Slam, won a doubles title in a Grand Slam, won multiple titles and made money. But I think the one thing that is now on my target is a Grand Slam. I think that will be the only thing that will shut people up at the end of the day. That’ll be my deep motivation.

Kyrgios has beaten every member of the Big Four, including multiple wins over Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Overall, he has managed to achieve more than 200 Tour-level wins and won a total of seven titles in his career so far.

Nick Kyrgios defends his ‘bad boy of tennis’ image

More than his game and skills, Nick Kyrgios makes headlines for his antics on the court. The Australian’s frequent show of emotions led to him getting the tag of ‘bad boy of tennis.’ However, time and again, Kyrgios has defended himself and did the same when queried about it in his recent interview.

Kyrgios said that he got the tag because he did not behave like normal tennis players. However, he feels that he does not carry that perception in his homeland anymore.

I guess I was branded that just because I was a bit outside the circle of what a normal tennis player is. I don’t think I carry that perception with the Aussie public anymore. But at the start of my career, people thought I was like a murderer.

Notably, Kyrgios was issued a 16-week suspended ban and a $25,000 (£20,300) fine for “aggravated behavior” in 2019 following an investigation by the ATP. He has also been called out by tennis experts on many occasions for his behavior.
