Nick Kyrgios returned to tour at the Brisbane International after being away for eighteen months due to injury. The Aussie was hoping to reach the final stages of the tournament but that didn’t materialize. With just a week into the 2025 season, Kyrgios has already begun criticizing the ATP Tour schedule.

The 2022 Wimbledon finalist made his comeback with a win in the doubles of the Brisbane International alongside Novak Djokovic. The pair defeated Alexander Erler and Andreas Miles in the first round but were knocked out in the second round after losing 2-6, 6-3, 8-10 to Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus.

The 29-year-old then fell to a disappointing defeat against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The Australian star delivered a commendable performance after being away for almost two years but it was not enough as Perricard won the first round singles match 7-6(2), 6-7(4), 7-6(3).

Also, he struggled with wrist discomfort in the match, raising doubts about his fitness ahead of the Australian Open. Kyrgios shared his frustration about the long months players spend traveling because of the tour schedule.

The tour is out of one’s mind compared to any other sport. The amount of travel we do is not logical especially since we are not paid what we should be, it’s a joke. It’s a very tough sport, especially if you come from Australia, because you can go six, seven, eight months without seeing your family if you commit to a busy schedule. You see it in guys like Medvedev, who at the end of the year was so exhausted. It’s way too long, I think we can all agree on that.

Kyrgios showed signs of rust in his opening match against Mpetshi Perricard. Despite having all the time to prepare for the tournament, his lack of top-level matches was eventually a big disadvantage. It will take months for him to get to his best tennis again.

After Nick Kyrgios announced his comeback in October 2024, he also revealed that his goal is to win a Grand Slam. However, with his elimination from the Brisbane International, both singles and doubles, he will be heading to Melbourne to fine-tune his preparation for the Australian Open.

Nonetheless, Kyrgios’ goal might have changed after the recent defeat. The Aussie revealed that he’s not focused on ranking but rather on his physical well-being ahead of the Melbourne Grand Slam.

For me, there is no ranking goal for me personally. I’m sure people are going to be telling me you’ve got to get your ranking up. For me, I don’t think anything about that at all. It’s more about just getting healthy, getting back playing and enjoying the competition and coming back from the injury I had.

The Australian Open will kick off on January 12. It will be Kyrgios’ first Grand Slam competition since the 2022 US Open, where he reached the quarterfinals. His greatest achievement in a major event remains reaching the final of Wimbledon.
