Umpire Nick Mahrley was diagnosed with a concussion after being mistakenly hit by Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Staton’s broken bat on Sunday. During the game between the Pinstripes and Colorado Rockies, umpire Mahrley fell to the ground after the bat hit the back of his head and neck during heavy contact.
The umpire was immediately given medical attention and was on the field for a couple of minutes before being carted off from the Yankee Stadium. The fans cheered for the umpire to still make the call before exiting the game.
Crew Chief Marvin Hudson took over his position, and base umpire Hunter Wendelstedt moved to first base from second base. Stanton’s bat broke when he shot the ball to the left field, and the barrel knocked off Mahrley’s mask and hit on the left side.
That was a tough one. When you see a neck brace and a stretcher, those are not at all good things. Hopefully, Nick will be OK. Those umpires are good guys. They’re a big part of our game, and they’re exposed every night behind the plate, just like a catcher.Rockies manager Bud Black as per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.

The New York Yankees said that Mahrley is scheduled to undergo multiple tests further. Fans are hoping nothing serious comes up in the reports in the following days. He’ll not be participating in the next couple of games due to his injury.
Social media reacts to umpire Nick Mahrley’s concussion
Colorado Rockies pitcher Austin Gomber commented on umpire Nick Mahrley’s concussion incident noting he wants to see him back on the diamond before the season ends, hopefully. He wishes him a quick recovery just like others praying for his safety.
New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge added how difficult of a job the umpires are handling as they have to be exposed to erratic balls, and even broken barrels while calling for the game. Judge said “To see him get carted off” from the field.

Freak accident where umpire Nick Mahrley gets hit by a broken bat. Hard to avoid being injured in this situation, but can’t help think that he MIGHT have been better protected in this isolated case had he been wearing a hockey style helmet. Totally understand that what pic.twitter.com/0WHbXHXpRC

Bat struck him under his jaw and again again the side of the head. Hopefully he doesn’t have a broken jaw

That’s gonna leave a mark.

Hope he is ok. If that bat rotated just a little more, he might have gotten the sharp end.

Judge further emphasizes how the umpires have to deal with fan and player complaints, manage chaos on the field, and be careful of strikes and balls, as they have to make split-second decisions. Fans are also hoping to see umpire Nick Mahrley back on the field after recuperation.
