In recent years Nick Taylor has developed a habit of winning on the PGA Tour through playoff rounds. On Saturday at the Sony Open in Hawaii, the Canadian international claimed his 5th PGA Tour win, his third win since 2023. All of those wins since 2023 have been through playoff rounds.
In the final round, Taylor found himself trailing the leaders. He missed back-to-back birdies at No.15 and No.16 from close range. It seemed all over for him at that moment.
At the 18th hole, Taylor was 14-under and needed a miracle. His second shot went wayward and resulted in him getting a relief. On the par-5 hole, his third attempt saw him make an incredible chip and record an eagle to suddenly go 16-under. He was then tied for the lead along with Nico Echavarria.

The playoff that looked possible all day long between J.J. Spaun and Stephan Jaeger fell apart after the two golfers made late bogeys and dropped out of contention.
After making birdies in the first playoff hole, Taylor was able to get the better of Echavarria in the second playoff hole. This marked a win in three consecutive season for him, all coming in playoffs.
At the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, he defeated Tommy Fleetwood. This made the first winner of the tournament from Canada since 1954. In the 2024 season, he outlasted Charley Hoffman at the WM Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, Arizona.

For his performances, Taylor took home $1.5 million from the $8.7 million purse. Nico Echavarria, who finished runner-up to Taylor, got $948,300 for his efforts in this event.
Meanwhile, Hideki Matsuyama, who won The Sentry and was looking for a Hawaii sweep, finished T16 and earned $132,675 from this event. Had he won in this event, he would have become just the third player to go back-to-back at The Sentry and the Sony Open.
