Nick Wright has never been shy about making bold statements. The famous Kansas City Chiefs fan’s latest take on the San Francisco 49ers and their quarterback situation is no different.

On The Herd, the Fox Sports analyst shared his thoughts on how the 49ers should approach Brock Purdy’s contract negotiations. His stance was clear—San Francisco should not rush to pay Purdy a massive deal.

The 49ers are amidst a financial reset. After a disappointing 2024 season, they have moved on from several key players. This approach is likely influenced by Purdy’s looming contract extension. The quarterback is entering the final year of his rookie deal, and his next contract could be one of the biggest in NFL history.

Wright, however, does not believe Purdy should automatically receive a top-tier contract. He argued that the 49ers should test their quarterback before committing to a long-term deal.

If I were running the Niners, I would offer Brock such a team-friendly, almost insulting deal, that I didn’t expect him to take because I really do want to see him this year without a super team around him. If he looks like he did last year without a super team around him, and if that’s the case, then that’s simply a player you cannot pay $55+ million.

Nick Wright admitted

The market for quarterbacks has never been higher. Several players have signed deals worth $55 million or more per year. Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, and Trevor Lawrence are among those earning that amount. Dak Prescott secured a $60 million per year extension last year from the Dallas Cowboys.

Brock Purdy has already proven his value. Since taking over as the 49ers’ starter, he has led the team to a Super Bowl appearance and an NFC Championship Game. Even in a down year for the team, he remained one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the league. According to PFSN’s QB+ rankings, Purdy finished as the seventh-best quarterback in the NFL last season.

The San Francisco 49ers face a hard dilemma

The debate now is whether Brock Purdy deserves a top-tier contract. Supporters like Joe Montana argue that Purdy has done enough to justify a massive deal. He has shown stability in big games and has performed well under pressure. His numbers are comparable to those of other elite quarterbacks. If the 49ers hesitate, they risk losing a player who has already brought them to the brink of a championship.

On the other hand, critics like Nick Wright believe Brock Purdy’s success is tied to the talent around him. The 49ers have had one of the most complete rosters in football. Their offense featured stars like Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, and George Kittle. Their defense has also been one of the best in the league. Without this supporting cast, Wright questions whether Purdy can maintain his level of play.

The 49ers now face a crucial decision. If they commit to Purdy, they must be sure he is the quarterback of the future. If they take Wright’s approach, they risk alienating a player who has already given them so much success. Either way, Purdy’s contract will be one of the biggest stories of the NFL season.
