Nick Wright sharply reacts to Colin Cowherd predicting the Chiefs taking a step back in 2025: “This is an annual tradition”

NFL analysts Nick Wright and Colin Cowherd pose varied views about Chiefs chances in 2025 after the loss of Joe Thuney in the O-line.

The 40-22 loss in the Super Bowl LIX was a reality check for the Kansas City Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes and Co. failed to score a single point in the first half. By the time they finally found their rhythm, the Philadelphia Eagles had already done, dusted, and buried the game.

The manner in which the Chiefs took the beating at the hands of their NFC counterparts birthed the idea that it put a dent in the dynasty plans. The usual reaction would be to reinforce the weak areas with the help of free agency and a few trade deals.

While other teams strengthened their rosters, the Chiefs re-signed several of their players whose contracts were ending. FOX analyst Colin Cowherd in a recent segment of The Herd targeted the Chiefs, claimed that they are gradually losing ground on their AFC West opponents (Chargers, Raiders, and Broncos).

I really worry about Kansas City. Joe Thuney is one of the more valuable offensive linemen in the league, and he left. And they didn’t want him to leave, [but] they couldn’t afford him. They don’t have a left tackle. They paid a lot for Jaylon Moore, who has never been a starter, by the way.

On top of it, the Chiefs lost veteran players like left guard Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears, replacing him with former San Francisco 49ers Jaylon Moore.

By the way, they’re not going to go 11-0 in one-score games. Raiders are better, Broncos will be better, the Chargers will be better. It never lasts forever.

Nick Wright disagreed with Colin Cowherd that the Chiefs are a weaker team compared to last year

Cowherd welcomed Nick Wright into the argument, and the host of First Things First, a known Chiefs supporter, wasn’t on board with his colleague’s assessment. Wright countered Cowherd, pointing out that every year he tries to picture the Chiefs being weaker than they actually are.

This is an annual tradition [of yours Colin]. where you pick a new team to win the AFC West [other than the Chiefs] and then, midway through the year, you’re like, ‘Yeah, I probably shouldn’t have done that [when the Chiefs put together a winning streak].

Wright wasn’t finished. In fact, he doubled down on his initial argument. From his point of view, the Chiefs didn’t lose Thuney, and Moore could prove to be a valuable asset for the team.

Was there a gun to Brett Veach’s head [or something] when he called the Bears and traded him? They didn’t lose Joe Thuney [Colin] they traded Thuney. So, I just gotta say, the rest of your bracket feels a lot like we are respecting the teams that were really good last year, except for, of course, the Chiefs.

Cowherd isn’t a fan of the Chiefs reworked offensive line

This wasn’t the first occasion the Cowherd claimed the Chiefs’ offensive line, which was not great last year, became weaker after losing Thuney.

I think Kansas City pulling back for a year because the offensive line is absolutely in flux. Their left tackle has never been a starting left tackle… Their offensive line is in flux.

The NFL analytical department sided with Cowherd with this. After Thuney, the Chiefs also let go of WR DeAndre Hopkins, defensive back Justin Reid, and WR Justin Watson.

On the positive side, Veach re-signed WR Hollywood Brown (one year), LB Nick Bolton (three years, $45 million with $30 million guaranteed), CB Kristian Fulton (two years, $20 million with $15 million guaranteed), and RB Elijah Mitchell (one year, $3.5 million). Pro Football Focus gave the Chiefs free agency business a B-.
