FC Barcelona picked up their second win of the new season as Lamine Yamal & Robert Lewandowski bagged the goals for the hosts. Their opponents Athletic Club have always been a tough nut to crack for the Blaugrana. Bilbao’s main man Nico Williams made headlines for his stunning performances at UEFA Euro 2024. He further stirred up commotion by snubbing the Spanish giants despite heavy interest from Joan Laporta and co.
Barcelona took the early lead in the game through 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, who curled in his shot from well outside the penalty area. Despite being on target, the shot was helped on its way to goal through a significant deflection by an opposition defender.
While Yamal shone against the men in violet, his friend and opponent Williams couldn’t say the same for himself. Operating from the position of a left winger, Nico Williams did not have a single moment of peace as defender Jules Kounde ‘locked him up’.
There was only one winner in the duel as Kounde ended the game being dribbled past by the 22-year-old a total of zero times. Kounde also won more duels compared to the forward in the 90 minutes played.

Fans were excited to see FC Barcelona come out on top as they took on Athletic Club at Estadi Olímpic Lluis Companys. More than the result, fans were more pleased to see Kounde claim the upper hand over someone who ‘rejected’ a move to the club.
A fan pointed out that Kounde gave Williams a taste of how it’s like to play against a ‘big’ side. Another claimed that Kounde is easily one of the best defensive full-backs in the sport.
A fan was convinced that had Kounde not kept Williams under control, the club would’ve easily lost the game. However, fans were witness to the Athletic Club man spending time and conversing with Lamine Yamal’s family after the game. Despite their rivalry on the pitch, it is clear that Williams is still one of Yamal’s closest friends in the sport.
As Barcelona racked up six points from two games, they find themselves in second position. Rivals Real Madrid are 14th, even though they have a game in hand and drew their League opener. Following the win, Flick and co. will now be looking forward to claim their third win of the season against Rayo Vallecano. The club will have a clearer idea of their schedule once the UEFA Champions League draw commences.
