Nico Williams is one of the best young talents in the game at the moment. The Athletic Club star earned a spot in Spain’s starting line-up alongside Lamine Yamal, and it’s safe to say that the youngster did not disappoint. The 21-year-old had the defending champions on skates for well over 70 minutes, until he was subbed off by Luis de la Fuente.
His stunning performance earned him the player of the match award too! Fans were excited to see the youngster ball out for Spain amidst rumors that the forward will join FC Barcelona in the future. In a recent interview, Lamine Yamal admitted that Williams is the player he wants to share the Barcelona locker room with in the future.
In particular, what impress fans most was his stunning display against his marker, Giovanni Di Lorenzo. The forward gave the Italian no chance as he nearly set up Pedri for the opener.
He also missed a golden chance to push his side into the lead with a header. Ultimately, his cross into the box led to the only goal of the game, which came through an own goal by Riccardo Calafiori.
Fans react to Nico Williams’ stunning performance as Spain master Italy
Defending champions Italy were hanging on for dear life as Spain rolled up to Veltins Arena for a thrilling encounter in Group B. La Roja have their youngsters to thank for the win even though the 1-0 score line doesn’t do justice to the dominant display put up by the men in red. It was clear from the start that Italy were in for a long night, as a fan commented that it could’ve been much worse for the Italians.
Another added that Barcelona will be extremely lucky if they are to finalize the signing of Williams. A Spanish supporter opined that the POTM showed no mercy to Lorenzo for the 78 minutes he played. Some even equated his performance to that of Lionel Messi against Jerome Boateng in 2015 in the UEFA Champions League!
Some were reminded of Vinicius Jr. the way Williams operated with ease and a maturity beyond his years. A fan joked that he plays like he doesn’t listen to his coach and that’s what made him special. With his impressive display against the Gli Azzurri, Nico Williams is likely to retain his spot against Albania in their final group stage match.
