Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets suffered a double blow during their match against the Miami Heat. It was a humiliating 147-123 loss to the Heat at the Kaseya Center on Monday night. But the bigger concern for the club would have been when Jokic was seen clutching his left knee after a collision with teammate Spencer Jones. At first, everyone expected the worst.
But it appears that the basketball gods have answered the prayers of the Nuggets fans, as those fears have been put to rest. It has been reported that Nikola Jokic avoided any serious damage as his knee ligaments are intact and will be evaluated after four weeks. It was a freakish injury, but the good news is that the Nuggets’ hopes of contending for the championship are still very much on.
While Jokic is known for his performances on the court, it is his durability that has helped the Nuggets remain among the best teams over the last few years. Since his ankle injury in 2017, Jokic has not missed five games in a row due to injury. In fact, the least number of games he has played in a season is 69 games, highlighting his ability to stay injury-free.
Before the injury, Jokic was having a historic season and was the frontrunner in the league-MVP race ahead of reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luka Doncic. The Serb is currently averaging 29.6 points, 12.2 rebounds and 11 assists in the 31 games he has played in so far.
Before the Nuggets took on the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night, Jokic was seen walking without crutches, much to the delight of the fans.

The Nuggets came out on top against the Raptors in a closely fought game as they won 106-103 at the Scotiabank Arena. Promising signs for the Nuggets as they look to stay in the top six of the Western Conference standings in the absence of their star center for the next few weeks.

Jamal Murray has to step up for the Nuggets
With Jokic ruled out, a lot of the offensive burden falls on the shoulders of Jamal Murray. The guard was drafted as the number seven pick in the 2016 NBA draft. The duo of Jokic and Murray has been one of the most formidable offensive duos in the league over the last few years.
Currently in his ninth season in the NBA, the Canadian international is having his career-best season and is likely to be selected as an NBA All-Star for the first time in his career. Murray is currently averaging 25.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 6.9 assists so far.

Following the win over the Raptors in which he scored 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and six assists, Murray spoke about the team’s performance on Wednesday and what lies ahead without Jokic for the next few weeks.
We did enough. I could be a lot better, but it was just fun to play home and see my friends and family. We just keep doing what we’re doing, play fast, play aggressive on defense, we got to come together and do all the little things. I need to play my own game, stay aggressive, stay composed and play quickly. But I’m also trying to stay unselfish.
The Nuggets will need Murray to step up till Jokic returns, and the 28-year-old has shown that he is more than capable of carrying the load. All that is needed from him is some consistency as the Nuggets try to hold on to their third place in the standings in a stacked Western Conference.
