Mumbai Indians owner Nita Ambani was spotted covering her ears during the team’s 2025 IPL opener against arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings. This sight happened at the Chepauk stadium. She was forced to do so to counteract the escalating noise of the crowd, which intensified dramatically as MS Dhoni walked out to bat.
Chennai Super Kings faced off against their arch-rivals Mumbai Indians in their opening match of the new IPL season. The Men in Yellow played at their iconic home venue, the MA Chidambaram Stadium, as they triumphed over their rivals. MI posted a competitive total of 155 runs after struggling to score in the final overs. CSK chased down the target in 19.1 overs, losing six wickets in the process.
CSK’s bowling attack was spearheaded by the young Noor Ahmed, who comes off a brilliant IPL stint with the Gujarat Titans. The 20-year-old Afghan spinner took four crucial wickets, giving away just 18 runs.
His efforts limited MI to a low total. While CSK endured a good start to the chase, led by captain Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 53 run knock off 26 balls, they lost momentum after losing few quick wickets in the middle-overs.

MI youngster Vignesh Puthur shined, as he took the big wickets of Gaikwad, Shivam Dube and Deepak Hooda. A rash decision by Ravindra Jadeja in the 19th over saw him getting run out at the striker’s end by Deepak Chahar. However, immediately after Jadeja’s dismissal, the home crowd erupted in cheers, as it marked the arrival of their favorite player, MS Dhoni, onto the pitch for the finishing touch.

The crowd cheered and roared fervently, as the 43-year-old former Indian captain walked out with the bat in hand, in his much-loved style and enigma. The noise in the Chepauk was so overwhelming that it forced MI owner Nita Ambani to cover her ears with her hands. She had an ice-cold reaction to the noise, which had increased almost tenfold, making her visibly uncomfortable.

Nonetheless, it does depict the love and fan following that MS Dhoni commands in Chennai. Dhoni has been an inseparable part of the franchise for 16 years now, and does get the same reception from the CSK fans whenever he comes out to bat. However, the 43-year-old faced just two balls off MI’s Naman Dhir. Instead of finishing off the match in ‘style’, Dhoni handed over the strike to a Rachin Ravindra.

Ravindra went on to hit fellow New Zealand international Mitchell Santner for a six in the first ball of the 19th over, helping CSK claim a hard-earned victory. The 25-year-old ended the match as the top-scorer, with 65 runs off 45 balls, at a strike rate of 144.44.

Young left-arm spinner Vignesh Puthur had an IPL debut to remember as he ended with figures of 3/32 in his four over for Mumbai Indians, against Chennai Super Kings. The 24-year-old was handed a special award by MI owner Nita Ambani, following which he bowed down to touch her feet.

Puthur was brought in as an impact substitute in the match, replacing Rohit Sharma. He made an impact soon after, claiming three crucial wickets. Despite CSK having won the match, Nita Ambani made sure to commend the young bowler for his brilliant display. She presented him with a ‘Best Bowler’ pin, while Puthur touched Nita Ambani’s feet as a mark of respect and gratitude.

The Indian cricket legend patted Vignesh Puthur on his shoulders, and added in a few words of appreciation. Interestingly, the young bowler from Kerala, has never played state cricket. It remains to be seen if he can perform on a consistent basis after a sensational debut.
