Nitto ATP Finals 2020: Daniil Medvedev delivers major upset to book semi-final spot, stuns World No.1 Novak Djokovic against all odds
Daniil Medvedev vs Novak Djokovic

Daniil Medvedev scored his second victory at the Nitto ATP Finals after ousting Novak Djokovic. Medvedev earned this victory over the 17-time Grand Slam champion 6-3, 6-3 in just 81 minutes.

The World No.4 demolished the 5-time champion of this event at The O2. With it, he booked a spot in the semi-finals of this coveted event. This is in fact quite the turn of the table as Medvedev was eliminated last year after he lost all his matches in this very tournament.

1 set down, 1 to go

Medvedev has clinched the top spot in Group Tokyo 1970 after moving to a 2-0 lead. The 24-year-old came back from a 2-3 lag to win 7 consecutive games. He didn’t give the top seed any free points and had a counter-attack for all of Novak’s offensive shots.

First off, the Serbian saved the first four break points he faced. However, once he missed a low forehand at 3-3 to lose his serve, Medvedev stormed through with his power. Djokovic receded to the use of drop shots in rallies which ultimately didn’t work in his favour. He double-faulted on the set point and gave Medvedev a much-awaited lead. Plus, his adversary kept stuck to keeping the points short and won the first set  6-3.

The 4th seed won an astounding 61% of his second-serve points as compared to Djokovic’s 43%. Medvedev built on the momentum from the 1st set and gained a 3-0 lead in the second soon thereafter.

The duo stayed on serve for the next few games, but Medvedev was soon a point away from the finish line. He crossed it when he hit a forehand winner on his first match point and secured the victory 6-3, 6-3. While Djokovic heads on to face off against Alexander Zverev, Medvedev will clash against Diego Schwartzman.
