Nitto ATP Finals 2020: Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev looking end season on a high
World No. 2 Rafael Nadal has stepped foot in London ahead of the year-ending Nitto ATP Finals 2020 and so has this year’s US Open Champion, Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev, who won the Rolex Paris Masters to become World No.4 by replacing Roger Federer.
Rafa, who flaunts 20 Grand Slam titles of which 13 are solely the Roland Garros, has reached the finals of the London tournament twice but has never won the trophy. He is the second seed at the tournament and will be looking forward to bring home his maiden ATP Finals trophy.
The Spaniard has had a decent year so far, with only the Roland Garros to his name. He was stunned by Alexander Zverev on the indoor court at the semi-finals of the Paris Masters. Rafa must be looking to up his game a bit on the surface that he most struggles, to stay in the competition until the end.
Rafa, Thiem and Medvedev arrive for the final showdown this year!
On receiving the Austrian ‘Sportsman of the year’ award and clinching his maiden US Open title this year, Dominic Thiem has had a lot to celebrate in a year that most wish to forget. The Austrian recently declared himself fit for the ATP Finals after recovering from a foot injury at the Vienna Open earlier this year.
This will be the World No. 3’s 5th appearance at the ATP Finals where he was the finalist in 2019 against the defending champion of this year, Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Daniil Medvedev who will be entering the tournament only for the second time this year, had won only three of his last eight matches before he found his feet in Paris to go past the likes of Kevin Anderson, Milos Raonic, Schwartzman and Zverev to end a 13 month title drought.
The most disappointing of Medvedev’s ATP Finals defeats in 2019 came against Rafael Nadal when he imploded from 5-1 up in a deciding set with a match point. However, he mentioned that he has been working on himself and having just won a title, he is definitely in a ‘better shape’ ahead of this year’s ATP finals.
Amongst the volume of talent that already exists in the eight-man tournament, Rafael Nadal still remains the top contender. However, it’s going to be quite a challenge as the other competitors include World No.1 Novak Djokovic, defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev and Andrey Rublev also in the draws.
Clearly, there is a lot to anticipate as the top eight tennis players gear up for the prestigious tournament.
London begins to prepare for the final time as the ATP season comes to an end. The ATP Finals begin from 15th November behind closed doors at the O2 Arena in London one last time before it is shifted to Turin next year.
