Refereeing has been a constant issue in modern-day football, and it struck once again during the big Monday night clash between AFC East rivals the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills. As many as 22 combined penalties were shown on the night—some of them worse than the others.

It got to the point when former players and analysts began posting against the refereeing decisions, which left a big impact on the outcome. It began with the refs overlooking a late hit on Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers. A year ago, Rodgers tore his Achilles while playing against the Bills. So, he wasn’t happy about it.

Later, as the Jets trailed the Bills near the end of the first half, Rodgers found wide receiver Garrett Wilson, and everyone thought it was a touchdown. They had to rub their eyes a couple of times as Wilson dropped the ball after two Bills players rammed into him mid-air after the catch was made. Fans demanded unsportsmanlike conduct, but the refs deemed it a fair challenge.

In another incident involving Wilson, the refs gave a defensive pass interference when there was barely any contact. Wilson mistimed his jump, and the ball landed in no-man’s-land with a Bills corner providing tight coverage. The only fault in the play was Rodgers overthrew the ball, so the pass was higher than its intended target, Wilson.

Then there was the battle of brawn between Bills right tackle Spencer Brown and Jets linebacker Will McDonald IV. Brown and McDonald were in each other’s throats all night, but one particular instance got heated more than they should have.

A clip showed Brown using his height advantage, towering over McDonald and muscling him down to the ground. TV announcers thought the ref would throw the penalty marker, but he never did.

Aaron Rodgers wasn’t happy with the refereeing and even called out the officials in the post-game presser.

These refs are bias tonight. I don’t use that lightly, but it’s apparent. These aren’t my teams but these calls don’t make sense. I see similar contact from buffalo DBs and nothing being called.

Aaron Rodgers said

According to NFL research, 22 penalties were shown in the game, which resulted in the loss of more than 200 yards. Well, it doesn’t show how many the refs missed, but Rodgers and DBs would argue there were significantly more.
