Rafael Nadal recently competed at the Bastad Open where he entered as a wildcard. After cruising through the opening rounds, he found himself playing his first quarterfinal, semifinal, and final since 2022.
The Spaniard returned to Bastad for the first time since 2005 when he won a title here. He was also looking to gain some momentum heading into the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Although he managed to reach the final in Bastad, he could not win the title. Nuno Borges was in remarkable form and comfortably beat Nadal 6-3, 6-2 in the final. Despite the loss, Nadal was honored by the tournament organizers. He was gifted a replica of the title he won in 2005 along with a framed photo of him winning it.

Rafael Nadal gives an honest assessment of his final performance at the Nordea Open
After a week of amazing tennis, Rafael Nadal failed to get the better of Nuno Borges in the Nordea Open final. It was the 38-year-old’s first final appearance since 2022 and he hoped to win a title. However, he was unable to get past a resilient Borges.
After the defeat, Nadal said that he was upset with his performance and disclosed that he felt too tired to give it his all in the final.
I just have to accept everything that comes and keep working to improve. I played very badly and I'm sad about it, I find it difficult to play worse than I did todayRafael Nadal said via Punto De Break
Nonetheless, the Spaniard found some confidence and form in Sweden and will be hoping to carry it to the Paris Olympics. The quadrennial event is set to get underway on Friday (July 26) and Nadal is scheduled to play in both the singles and the doubles events.
