Novak Djokovic has revealed that he’s not fully satisfied with the way the 2025 season panned out for him. The former World No.1 revealed in January that he would play in more tournaments than the previous year and had hired British legend Andy Murray to be his coach at the Australian Open.
But at the first Grand Slam in Melbourne, he played excellent tennis at the tournament to reach the semi-finals, particularly in the quarter-finals, where he had to come from behind to beat Carlos Alcaraz despite sustaining an injury. However, in the last four matches against Alexander Zverev, Djokovic retired.
His return to the court saw him lose two consecutive opening matches in Qatar and Indian Wells. Nevertheless, he went on to reach the final of the Miami Open and was the favorite to win the title but he lost to 20-year-old Jakub Mensik in straight sets. He failed to recover from the shocking loss in time, which saw him lose two clay-court opening matches.
That led him to part ways with Andy Murray in April and forced him to compete at the Geneva Open ahead of the French Open. He claimed his 100th title at Geneva and went on to reach the semi-finals of the Roland Garros. He crashed out of the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open in the semi-finals also.
Djokovic’s ambition of claiming his 25th Grand Slam will now have to wait for another year. During his press conference at the Six Kings Slam, he revealed that he is not fully satisfied with his 2025 season. He added that the season was not good compared to his previous standards on tour:
That’s what I’ve done. Four Grand Slam semi-finals this year. I’m not fully satisfied, because you know, I achieved the greatest heights in this sport so many times, and there’s always a part of me that is like, ‘only the title counts in a sense’. The new reality is the way it is. I have to be satisfied with being top five in the world in these circumstances. So that’s how I see it.
Djokovic’s most recent tour-level match was against Valentin Vacherot in the semi-final of the Rolex Shanghai Masters. He had withstood the humid conditions of the tournament but couldn’t get past the French qualifier in the last four after struggling with a leg injury. He lost the tie in straight sets.
Novak Djokovic hopes to reach the level of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner
Novak Djokovic made his first appearance on the court since the Rolex Shanghai Masters at the Six Kings Slam exhibition tournament. The Serbian legend fell to Jannik Sinner in straight sets in the semi-finals of the tournament. It was a one-sided display as Sinner dominated the match, losing just six games.

Djokovic has not only struggled against Sinner this season but also against Carlos Alcaraz. The former World No.1 revealed during the aforementioned interview that he hopes to close the gap between him and the two stars. He added that he understands that his body is not at the level it was when he was younger:
I know that things are a bit different for me now in terms of the level of tennis and my body. It’s not like when I was at my peak. I know that. But I still go. I still try to play at the highest level and compete with the best players in the world. Jannik and Carlos are, without a doubt, a few levels above all of us, but I still try to close the gap and challenge them in the biggest tournaments.
Djokovic is currently third in the ATP Live Race To Turin. He’s likely to seal his place in the tournament in the coming weeks but there are doubts that he might not compete at the tournament. He did that last year despite qualifying for the tournament.
