Alex de Minaur withdrew from the quarterfinal clash with Novak Djokovic hours before the scheduled match on Wednesday (July 10). The Aussie 9th seed suffered a hip injury during his fourth-round clash with Arthur Fils and doubts loomed over his participation in the quarterfinal.
De Minaur said he heard a crack toward the end of his win over Fils, which he won with a scoreline of 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. During his speech after the win, he said he’d be alright, but medical exams revealed the severity of the injury.
Obviously, not an announcement I wanted to make, by any means. I'm devastated. It's no secret that, at this stage of my career, this was the biggest match of my career. So I wanted to do anything I could to play. I knew what the results were yesterday, but I still wanted to wake up today and feel some sort of miracle and not feel it while I'm walking.Alex de Minaur said at the press conference
De Minaur, who had been also struggling to sleep because of the pain and will take three to six weeks to recover, made it to his first quarterfinal of his career at Wimbledon. Djokovic will now have two days off to prepare for the semifinal clash scheduled on Friday.
Novak Djokovic’s head-to-head record against Lorenzo Musetti and Taylor Fritz
Novak Djokovic, who has now advanced to his 13th Wimbledon semifinal, will face the winner of the quarterfinal clash between Lorenzo Musetti and Taylor Fritz scheduled on July 10. While Musetti made it to his first quarterfinal at the SW19, Fritz reached the last eight in 2022 for the first time.
Djokovic has faced 13th seed Fritz nine times and won every match but he never met the American on grass before. Also if the 26-year-old reaches the semifinal, he will lock horns with the Serb for the third time at a major event.
Against Musetti as well Djokovic leads 5-1 in their head-to-head meeting. The only win over the former World No.1 came in last year’s ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo which he won in three sets. They last met in the third round of Roland Garros where Djokovic was on the verge of losing but he came on top in five sets.
Djokovic is searching for his first title of the season and overall his 25th major title. At Wimbledon, he lifted the title seven times, one less than Roger Federer.
