Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios‘ bromance is going strong, as seen in the former’s funny interview at the US Open. Djokovic is yet to drop a set in his opening two matches at the final Grand Slam of the year, where he is looking to become the first player to win the 25 Major titles.

Djokovic arrived in New York after winning the Olympic singles gold medal in Paris. He skipped the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open and began his title defense against Moldova’s Radu Albot. Despite not playing a title match for three weeks, he showed no sign of rust.

Djokovic comfortably defeated Albot 6-2, 6-2, 6-4. In the second round against compatriot Laslo Djere, he committed 26 unforced errors. However, Djere failed to convert the chances and was visibly stressed in the humid conditions. In the third set, he retired due to an injury while trailing 6-4, 6-4, 2-4, putting Djokovic in the third round.

During his on-court interview with Kyrgios, the 37-year-old joked that he drank the Australian’s smoothie when asked what he does during his off days at the US Open.

The World No. 2 will face Canadian Open champion Alexei Popyrin in the third round at the US Open, which is a rematch of their Wimbledon third-round clash. Popyrin comfortably defeated Pedro Martinez 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 in the second round.

Novak Djokovic hails compatriot Laslo Djere after he retired from their second-round match at the US Open

Novak Djokovic hailed Laslo Djere for his good performance after the World No. 109 retired due to a hip problem. Djere had posed a constant threat from the start but Djokovic did well to step up, forcing his compatriot to make errors when needed to secure the win.

It was Djokovic’s 31st win of the season. However, for Djere, it was another injury setback. He had missed the majority of the season following elbow surgery in April. After the match, Djokovic commended Djere, stating that he was a good player.

It’s not what we want. It’s not what the crowd wants, to see a walkover. But he obviously had an injury that took him out of the Tour for some time and he is struggling to come back physically to this level. He’s such a good player, especially in these conditions.

By advancing to the third round of the US Open, Djokovic became the first man to reach 90 wins in all Grand Slam events. He is seven wins away from matching Jimmy Connors‘ win record at the Flushing Meadows.
