The 2024 US Open is turning out to be an anticlimax with the top seeds suffering early exit from the tournament. Two of the top three seeds, Novak Djokovic (2) and Carlos Alcaraz (3), are out of the tournament already. While Alcaraz bowed out after losing to Botic Van de Zandschulp in the second round, Djokovic was knocked out in the third round by Alexei Popyrin on Friday (August 30).
At the Arthur Ashe Stadium after the thrilling contest between Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton, Popyrin made a strong start against Djokovic. He quickly got off the blocks and won the first set decisively.
Popyrin took the first two sets and threatened to pull off a straight-sets win before Djokovic fought back in the third set. However, the Serbian could not keep the momentum as Popyrin came all guns blazing in the fourth set.
The 25-year-old raced to a 5-2 lead when Djokovic tried to challenge Popyrin by emphatically winning the next game. Though it seemed like Djokovic might turn things around, as he usually does, Popyrin stayed strong and wrapped up the contest with an ace, winning 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in three hours and 19 minutes.

It is worth mentioning that Djokovic came to the US Open after winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics. He did not play in any tournament before the year’s last Grand Slam, with the Serbian’s last hard court tournament being the Indian Wells Open.
Popyrin, on the other hand, will next face home favorite Frances Tiafoe in his first fourth-round appearance at the US Open. It will be the pair’s first meeting on the ATP tour.
