Novak Djokovic accepted Grigor Dimitrov‘s invitation to play an exhibition match, the proceeds of which will go to the latter’s foundation.
The match is set to be played on September 17 in the indoor courts of the Arena Sofia, which is also the venue for the Sofia Open, a recently established ATP 250 event. As the name suggests, the venue is in Sofia, the capital city of Dimitrov’s home country of Bulgaria.
Established in 2020, the Grigor Dimitrov Foundation mainly aims to help underprivileged and orphaned children in Bulgaria by providing them with all the required support. The money raised by the exhibition match will be used to help this cause.

This will be Djokovic‘s second exhibition match of the year. The first one was against Daniil Medvedev in Hurlingham at the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic ahead of the Wimbledon Championships, in which he prevailed 6-3, 6-4 despite suffering from knee issues and undergoing consequent surgery and rehabilitation.
Grigor Dimitrov returns to the tour after staying away from it for over a month
In his quarterfinal match against Daniil Medvedev at Wimbledon, Grigor Dimitrov suffered an unfortunate slip while trailing 2-3 in the first set, which led to a knee injury. He was eventually forced to retire even before the first set had concluded and pulled out of the match while trailing 3-5.
This injury had kept him away from competing for a month. He was also forced to give up the chance of representing Bulgaria at the Paris Olympics. Much to the delight of his fans, the World No.1 0 will be back in action this week as he begins his American hard court campaign swing at the Canadian Open.
He is competing in the ATP Masters 1000 event in Montreal, where he is playing in both singles and doubles (partnering Jamie Murray). Both his opening matches are scheduled to be played on Wednesday, August 7.
