Serbian tennis ace Novak Djokovic was in no mood to take any disrespect from the crowd during his fourth-round match at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. In his match against Holger Rune, the seven-time Wimbledon champion had to face a lot of booing from fans on the Centre Court. However, the Serbian as always thrived in the hostile environment and won the match in straight sets.
Djokovic beat Rune 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 to enter the quarterfinals at SW19. After the win, he spoke about the “disrespectful crowd” and wished them a good night. He also took a dig at the spectators who were disguising their booing as cheers for Rune.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion later took to social media and shared a picture of himself sliding on the court along with a cheeky caption.
Sliding into quarters. Goooooooooooood night :-)Novak Djokovic captioned his post on X
This is not the first time Djokovic has expressed his displeasure against the crowd at Wimbledon. Last year, he mocked the crowd with a crying gesture after the semifinal win over Jannik Sinner.
John McEnroe feels Novak Djokovic has been unfairly treated
John McEnroe has expressed his support for Novak Djokovic, stating that he has been unfairly treated by the Wimbledon crowd. Talking about the booing and jeering the Serbian received in last year’s final against Carlos Alcaraz, McEnroe has said that the 24-time Grand Slam champion has been disrespected.
While McEnroe admitted that Djokovic draws inspiration from his opponent getting all the support, the former American tennis ace said that he has been unfairly turned into a villain.
Novak has not only equaled them (Federer and Nadal) but surpassed them in overall achievements, which seemed impossible. Both of those guys, Rafa and Roger, they are total class acts. They are loved and respected around the world. Novak gets the unfair treatment. He’s the villain, the bad guy...‘I think it’s been unfair, honestly, because he is great for the game. On and off the court.John McEnroe said (via Metro.co.uk)
In the final against Alcaraz last year, Djokovic was involved in a spat with the crowd and later cupped his ears and blew sarcastic kisses to them whenever he won a game or a crucial point. However, he eventually lost the match and the crowd had the last laugh.
