As the muscle rupture during his Australian Open semifinal match against Alexander Zverev forced him to withdraw, Novak Djokovic has decided to skip the Davis Cup Qualifiers’ tie against Denmark, scheduled to start on January 31st.

Djokovic was injured during his quarterfinal clash with Carlos Alcaraz. In the first set, he called for a medical timeout and received the treatment, before beating the Spaniard in four sets. Then, in the semifinals, after losing the first set against Sascha, the Serb decided to pull out of the match.

Jim Courier backed Novak Djokovic to win 25 Grand Slam titles

Novak Djokovic, in the Australian Open, was chasing his historic 25th Grand Slam title. And in spite of injury spoiling his plans, he is backed by Jim Courier to win one more major before retirement.

I think his body is more like a 32-year-old’s body rather than a 37-year-old’s body. The game is more physical and we see him sliding into the corners chasing balls down. He’s been doing it for a long, long time.

Jim Courier told Eurosport

Last year in the French Open as well, Djokovic pulled out of the quarterfinal clash, which he was scheduled to play against Casper Ruud. Four-time Grand Slam champion Courier is worried that if Djokovic fails to keep injuries at a distance at this age, they could again affect his Grand Slam matches.

You’re going to pick up some injuries along the way, but his tennis is there. If his body cooperates, I’m sure we will see him win at least one more major. I think he can get through the first couple of rounds because he is simply that good and has no weaknesses to speak of.

Jim Courier added

Djokovic, after failing to win a major last year, started his season at the Brisbane International but was defeated in the quarterfinals by Reilly Opelka. He also played doubles in the tournament with Nick Kyrgios, but their campaign ended after defeat in the second round.

The last time he won a Major was in 2023, at the US Open, and played his last Major final at the 2024 Wimbledon, which he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.
