Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic is arguably the best tennis player the world has ever seen. He has won a record 24 singles Grand Slam titles, has been ranked the World No. 1 for over 400 weeks, and has seven ATP Finals titles to his name. However, one achievement that has eluded him so far is an Olympic Gold medal.
The 37-year-old is now one win away from achieving this dream, and Djokovic is excited about it. He has made it to the final of the men’s singles event at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a series of strong performances.
Djokovic expressed delight at the fact that his country will win a medal on Sunday (August 4) regardless of how he fares in the final.
This dream is long lived and fought for. I wanted to compete in the finals of Olympic games for such a long time. Representing my country at a global event is a huge privilege and honor that I cherish. Serbia will have a medal on Sunday!!! Ideeeemooooo.Novak Djokovic posted on X
Notably, Djokovic has won a solitary bronze medal at the Summer Games so far, which came at the 2008 Beijing Games. The Serbian has played in three editions since that but has not been able to reach the final.
Novak Djokovic eyeing the gold medal at Paris Olympics
Novak Djokovic might be rejoicing the fact that he will win an Olympic medal regardless of what happens in the final. However, deep down the 24-time Grand Slam champion would be eyeing the gold medal. In fact, the Serbian declared that he is going for the gold as he gears up to face Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday.
However, the job won’t be easy for Djokovic considering how he lost to Alcaraz the last time the two players met on the ATP tour. He was outclassed in straight sets in the Wimbledon final last month and it would be playing in his mind when he takes the court against the Spaniard.
Alcaraz, meanwhile, having won the Roland Garros title at the same venue in June, would be brimming with confidence. The 20-year-old has already promised his compatriots that he will “give them what they want: the gold”. This means that a thrilling game of tennis is on the cards in the Paris Olympic final.
