In four months, Novak Djokovic will be celebrating his 38th birthday and perhaps will be among the Top 3 oldest players still playing professionally. The Serbian has begun to trim his schedule as he understands that he can’t play in every tournament as he used to. Last year, he played in only 12 tournaments, the least among players in the Top 10.

He then ended the 2024 season without an ATP title for the first time since 2005. Also, he failed to win a Grand Slam and the last time that happened was in 2017. The 37-year-old only title came at the Paris Olympics, where he claimed the singles gold medal in his fifth attempt and after waiting for 16 years.

However, Djokovic made a surprise move this season, something that he has never done since 2009. The 24-time major champion decided to play at the Brisbane International and not only that, competed in both singles and doubles. He reached the quarterfinals of the singles and exited the doubles alongside Nick Kyrgios after one win.

Fans were surprised by the move and hoped he would play in more tournaments this season. But those hopes have been dashed to pieces, as Djokovic has revealed that he will reduce the amount of tournaments he plays in this year.

In order for me to keep going, I have to reduce the amount of tournaments I play and just focus on a select few. I don’t think I’ll play only four Slams and the Davis Cup. think I’ll play at least a lead-up tournament or two before Slams. Particularly on clay.

Djokovic is currently in Melbourne, where he hopes to.win the Australian Open. He has won the tournament a record 10 times and he last won the title in 2023. At the tournament, he will be with his new coach, Andy Murray, for the first time in his career.

Novak Djokovic has won everything that tennis has to offer and is amongst the greatest players that has ever played the sport. But, after almost two decades on the court, he doesn’t have many years to play. In fact, at 37, several players would have retired and engaged in other great things life has to offer.

But Djokovic is yet to reveal when he will retire. The Serbian revealed during the aforementioned interview that several people have advised him to retire as he will be doing so when he’s still winning titles. But he believes he is still physically capable to carry on with the demanding physicality of the sport.

Both publicly and privately, a lot of people told me they think it’s best if you leave on a high, which I understand – don’t get me wrong, I do understand that. But if I still physically am capable and I still feel like I can beat the best players in the world in Grand Slams – why would I want to stop now?

Djokovic is hoping to win his 100th title at the Australian Open. The former World No.1 had an opportunity to achieve the milestone in Brisbane but failed to do so despite being a favorite. He will try his chance in Melbourne when the first Grand Slam of the season starts on January 12.
