Novak Djokovic

Ever since Roger Federer took charge of the year-end World No.1 title in 2004, tennis fans have seen only four different players at the top in the previous 16 years. The Swiss dominated between 2004 to 2009 to join Jimmy Connors, who did it five times during the 70s, followed by Spaniard Rafael Nadal who has achieved the World No.1 ranking five times too after having his first brilliant year in 2008.

After 2019, Federer, Nadal and Novak Djokovic were tied on five year-end No.1 rank, leaving all the rivals far behind.

In ten of the previous 11 seasons, Rafa or Novak have stood as the year-end No. 1 player, hoping for another battle in 2021. However, Novak surpassed Nadal on the ATP throne at Melbourne where he went on to win his eighth Australian Open after defeating Dominic Thiem in a tight five-setter.

Besides, Djokovic has been the most consistent player in the reduced 2020 season despite having off the court issues and controversies.

The Serb has been the dominant figure in men’s tennis in the previous decade, accomplishing this feat four times between 2011-15 and adding another notable season in 2018 and now one more time in 2020.

Novak Djokovic equals Pete Sampras’ six times year-end No.1 record

One of the great Americans, ‘Pete Sampras‘ who ruled the 90s in terms of tennis was the only player with six year end No.1 rankings to his name until the Serbian, Novak Djokovic came up to catch him after what took a considerable amount of time in the sport.

Although the Serb was toppled in straight sets in the title match of the Roland Garros by Rafael Nadal, he still ended up earning points which made the difference for him on the ATP world rankings.

Sitting on World No.1, Djokovic entered the Vienna Open to secure his rank but was shown the way to exit by Lorenzo Sonego in the Quarter-final, his toughest loss this year.

Djokovic has been defeated only 3 times this year, out of which one was through disqualification.

Djokovic is a class apart and he has shown it to the world by sitting on the throne for the sixth time alongside only Pete Sampras, one of greatest to play the sport. It all makes sense, this feat is not ordinary.

He decided to skip the ATP Paris Masters 2020 but is preparing for the ATP Finals in London which begins from 15th November.
