Novak Djokovic has been in great shape since arriving for the Brisbane International in Australia. The Serbian is yet to drop a set since competing in the tournament and is into the quarterfinals already. With the former World No.1 full of confidence, he has confirmed he will play in more tournaments this year compared to last season.
Djokovic finished the 2024 season without winning a tour-level title. His only success came at the Paris Olympics, where he claimed his elusive gold medal. Towards the end of last year, he announced that his focus moving forward would be playing in Grand Slam and representing his country on national duties.
He also withdrew from several tournaments last season, including the Paris Masters and ATP Finals in Turin. However, Djokovic appointment of Andy Murray as his coach has brought in a fresh fire into his game. At Brisbane, the 37-year-old claimed his first win against Rinky Hijikata before dispatching Gael Monfils in straight sets.
During his press conference, he revealed that he intends to compete in the 2025 Indian Wells Masters and Miami Open in March. He added that he hopes to play in more tournaments this season, but that will be considered after the Australian Open.
Djokovic is without his new coach, Murray, in Brisbane but hasn’t shown any signs of rust on the court. The World No.1 is aiming to win his 100th career title in the tournament.
Novak Djokovic praises Gael Monfils after earning his 20th victory over the Frenchman
Novak Djokovic earned his 20th win over Gael Monfils on Thursday (January 2) to reach the last eight of the Brisbane International. The Serbian improved his one-sided rivalry against the Frenchman with a 6-3, 6-3 victory. He has now extended his position above Rafael Nadal‘s 18-0 record against Richard Gasquet.
However, after the match, Djokovic had some kind words for Monfils. He praised the French veteran for continuing playing at the top level and for his charismatic and entertaining personality on the court.
Djokovic will face Reilly Opelka in the quarterfinals on Friday (January 3). If he does win the match, he will play either Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard or Jakub Mensik in the semifinals.
