World No.2 Novak Djokovic made it to the Olympic Gold medal match for the first time in his career on Friday (August 2). The Serbian legend beat Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-2 to ensure that he bags at least the silver medal in Paris.
This is Djokovic’s best result at any Olympic event, as he had only secured a bronze medal previously in 2008. However, the 24-time Grand Slam champion has only one thing in mind for the ultimate match on Sunday.
Just to be clear, I am going for Gold!Novak Djokovic said to Serbian TV
It has been an incredible change of fortune for Djokovic, who had his participation at the Paris Olympics in jeopardy after a meniscus tear earlier this year at Roland Garros. However, the Serbian miraculously recovered to be available for Wimbledon, where he made the final.
Djokovic only competed in the singles format at the Paris Olympics, which wasn’t the case with most players who were playing in either men’s doubles or mixed doubles or both. However, the former World No.1 was solely focused on the Olympic singles gold medal.
Is Novak Djokovic the underdog against Carlos Alcaraz?
Novak Djokovic is set to play Carlos Alcaraz for the Gold medal match on Sunday. This will be a repeat of the Wimbledon final three weeks ago, in which the Spaniard dismantled the Serb in straight sets.

The Olympic event is played in a best-of-three format. Hence, it will take a great physical effort from both players who were in the last stages of Wimbledon three weeks ago.
In the best of five set matches, Alcaraz leads Djokovic 2-1. The Spaniard has beaten the Serb in the 2023 and 2024 Wimbledon finals but Djokovic has got the better of Alcaraz in their lone meeting at Roland Garros last year. However, that match was a foregone conclusion after Alcaraz pulled his hamstring early in the third set.
