World No.1, Novak Djokovic who defeated Diego Schwartzman in his first-round match in the ATP Finals on Monday, recently revealed his thoughts about wanting to play in the Australian Open next year. However, he is not that keen about competing in the second edition of the ATP Cup.

In the ATP Cup this year, Djokovic led his nation to the title clash against Spain whom they defeated 2-1 and won the first edition of the Cup. The Serb will not participate if there happens to be another edition of the ATP Cup next year.

I want to play in Australia: Djokovic

I hope that it will happen. I want to play in Australia, Australian Open. I’m not sure about the ATP Cup and the tournaments before, because obviously you have to leave quite in advance, I think two-and-a-half or three weeks prior to the first match“, Djokovic said post-match.

The plan for Australia would reportedly involves more than 500 international tennis players arriving in Victoria and undergoing two weeks of mandatory quarantine.

Under the plan, tournaments originally planned for Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Hobart, Adelaide and Canberra would all be played in Victoria before the Australian Open at Melbourne Park from January 18 to 31, which makes for the uncertainty of the ATP Cup as a state premier issued a blunt warning that it would scupper any event that risked reigniting Melbourne’s Covid-19 crisis.

Tennis Australia still needs to get a grip on a lot of essential matters regarding the tournaments and have to follow what the Australian government asks them to.

Eight times champion of the Australian Open, Djokovic said ‘for the sake of tennis‘ and also the players, everything must go along with the plan, that is without any doubt.

“I’m just hoping for the sake of tennis and sake of players that we will have Australian Open and also possibility of ATP Cup and couple more tournaments at least,” Djokovic added.

Novak Djokovic’s next fixture in the ongoing ATP Finals is against Daniil Medvedev.
