World No.1 Novak Djokovic‘s hopes of living upto the expectation of home fans in Belgrade were shattered in dramatic fashion on Saturday when he fell to Aslan Karatsev in the second longest ATP Tour match of the 2021 season at the Serbia Open.

The 28th-ranked Karatsev saved 23 of 28 break points to advance to his second final of the year following a 7-5,4-6,6-4 victory, gaining a sweet revenge for his defeat by Djokovic in the last four of the Australian Open.

It was a second surprise loss in as many weeks for Djokovic, who was also beaten in the last 16 of the Monte Carlo Masters by Britain’s Dan Evans in the quarter-finals.

Novak Djokovic’s elder son, Stefan, who is 6 years old was spotted in the stands at Belgrade during his semi-final match. He was seen jumping around passionately cheering his father and fist pumping at every point he won.

He said: “He was so passionate, he was jumping around a lot. It was incredible. He is starting to realize what I am doing.”

“They will not have the heartache and the challenges and obstacles that we had financially and economically, obviously,” Djokovic had earlier said. “But at the same time they will have to experience a much greater emotional challenge in their upbringing mentally to be regarded as ‘the son of’ or ‘the daughter of.'”

Novak Djokovic lost to Aslan Karatsev in the semi-final of the Serbia Open and is scheduled to play the Madrid Masters next.
