Novak Djokovic puts light on how the Wimbledon triumph pushed his confidence back on track after a ‘nightmare’ start to the season
Novak Djokovic with Wimbledon Trophy
2022 has proven to be an extremely challenging as well as controversial year for tennis legend Novak Djokovic. He was expelled from the Australian Open due to his unvaccinated status and subsequently lost his ATP World No.1 ranking to none other than Russian Daniil Medvedev. He gained some form though, by reaching the final of the Serbian Open, where he was defeated by another Russian Andrey Rublev.
With a slew of disappointing performances in some of the most prominent tournaments, the tennis world became increasingly worried about the ‘Champion Novak Djokovic’. He participated in his first Grand Slam this year in the French Open. Although he started strong, he was ousted from the tournament by his arch-rival Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals.
But then came Wimbledon, and the situation changed drastically for Novak Djokovic. He defeated the Australian Nick Kyrgios despite losing the first set. This was his 21st Grand Slam title. In a press conference from Paris, Novak talked about his big win in Wimbledon in its entirety to his viewers for the very first time and revealed how it pushed his confidence back on track for future tournaments. He noted:
“Wimbledon, I mean, always comes at the right time in my career when I need that huge confidence boost and big title. Wimbledon is always there. That was a huge also relief, I think, with everything that has happened this season,” Djokovic joked.
He later participated in the Laver Cup and played for Bjorn Borg-led Team Europe. He subsequently won both the Tel Aviv Open and the Astana Open before coming into the Paris Masters 2022. Continuing his train of thoughts, he further added:
“After Wimbledon, you know, I haven’t played for a while. Played Laver Cup, Tel Aviv, and Astana, and I played great, great tennis. Generally looking at my past career results indoors, I have had a really good record indoors generally, playing anywhere. I’ll make sure to keep going in this way, because I feel good,” he said.
“You know, I have been training last few days, so, you know, is another few days to my first match. As I said, I think coming back to a place where you have done so well, it always brings back good memories and good feelings on the court,” he further added.
Novak Djokovic is feeling confident that he can win the Paris Masters title yet again.
Suspense over Novak Djokovic’s participation in next year’s Australian Open is still on
Novak Djokovic may be one of the greatest male tennis players in the world, but despite that, there are a few things that even he cannot determine. He could not participate in this year’s Australian Open at the start of the year because he was not protected against COVID-19.
He wishes to play at the Australian Open tournament in 2023, however, will the Government of Australia allow him to play in the competition has to be seen. At the time of writing, nothing has been officially confirmed. For now, he is concentrating all his energies on winning the Paris Masters 2022 and the upcoming ATP Finals tournament.
He has won the ATP Finals tournament for a total of 5 times, but he would be looking to win it for the sixth time equaling Roger Federer’s record of winning the ATP Finals trophy for a maximum number of times. The Swiss has won the title a total of 6 times.
