Novak Djokovic opted not to speak much about French Open scheduling after winning a five-set thriller against Lorenzo Musetti in the third round on the Philippe-Chatrier court that ended after 3 am local time. Djokovic, though struggled in the early sets, made a terrific comeback to beat the Italian 7-5, 6-7(6-8), 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 in four hours and 29 minutes.
In the press conference later, Djokovic was asked to comment on scheduling the match between Grigor Dimitrov and Zizou Bergs on the Philippe-Chatrier court due to rain delays before his third-round clash with Musetti.
The Dimitrov-Bergs was affected by rain, and it was later moved to the Philippe-Chatrier. Djokovic, in spite of all the difficulties, wants to remain optimistic about it, saying there’s beauty in winning a match late at night.
I don’t want to be talking about scheduling. I think some things could have been handled a different way. But there’s beauty as well, I guess, winning a match at 3:30 am… If it’s the last one of the tournament. But it’s not, so I’m going to have to switch on all of my young genes and try to recover as soon as possible.Novak Djokovic said at the press conference
The Djokovic vs Musetti match was scheduled to start at 8.15 pm but as Dimitrov and Bergs started their match around 8, the former duo walked onto the court at 10:30. The five-set thriller lasted till 3:06 am and this triggered criticism from fans, including Coco Gauff, who called late matches unhealthy.
