Seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic has shared a flashback of the intense moment when he was down two championship points against Roger Federer in the 2019 Wimbledon final. The Serbian won the final 7-6, 1-6, 7-6, 4-6, 13-12.

In his pre-match practice session before the Wimbledon semi-final against Lorenzo Musetti, Djokovic was talking to the ball boys and his hitting partner, Nick Kyrgios. The Serbian discussed his mindset and thoughts when he was on the brink of losing the match.

So much noise and so many things were happening. On the 40-30 (point), I knew he was going to go here [down the middle] and come to the net. He came in on my forehand but his shot was short. At deuce, he stayed back, and I wanted him to stay on the baseline.

That was the third time Djokovic had beaten Federer in a Wimbledon final. The 37-year-old had previously defeated the Swiss Maestro in the 2014 and 2015 editions. Federer’s lone victory over Djokovic came in the 2012 Wimbledon semifinal.

It was also the third time Djokovic had beaten Federer from two match points down in a Grand Slam. The previous two occasions were in the 2010 and 2011 US Open semi-finals. The Serbian was down two match points in both matches but ended up winning 7-5 in the final set.

Roger Federer claims Novak Djokovic was the ‘party crasher’ of the ‘Fedal’ fans

In the new Amazon Prime documentary “Federer: Twelve Final Days,” Roger Federer talked about his great rival, Novak Djokovic. The Swiss Maestro called Djokovic the “party crasher” for fans of Federer and Rafael Nadal when he joined their battle for major titles. He also thinks the Serbian is “a little bit misunderstood.”

There was a lot of Rafa-Roger love there, so when Novak came probably a lot of people said, ‘Look, we don’t need a third guy. We’re happy with Roger and Rafa’. The Federer fans at the beginning didn’t really like him because they just thought, ‘Roger’s a bit more easy, he does it with ease’. Then Novak came in with his strong personality and that unbelievable grit of wanting to win at all costs. I think also Novak was triggered by the relationship with the fans.
Roger Federer said in his new documentary

Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic have been in a close race to be the best and most decorated male tennis player ever. The Swiss icon was the first to win a Grand Slam in 2003. Nadal won his first a couple of years later. Djokovic got his first major win in 2008.

Djokovic went on to win a record 24 Grand Slam titles, surpassing Nadal’s 22 and Federer’s 20. Despite this, the Belgrade native didn’t always get as much love from fans as his two greatest rivals.
