Novak Djokovic has responded to Daniil Medvedev‘s humorous remarks after the Russian’s five-set win over Kasidit Samrej. Following his victory on Tuesday, Medvedev joked that if the next generation, like Samrej, continues to play at a high level, they will enjoy many things in life. The Russian specifically mentioned “money, girls, casino,” which caused the audience to burst into laughter.

It seems Djokovic was among those who found the comments entertaining. After his win over Jaime Faria, the 24-time Grand Slam champion praised the Portuguese player’s performance and referenced Medvedev’s memorable quote from the previous day.

In the wise words of Mr. Medvedev.. If the future generation plays this way, they’re gonna have everything. Money, girls, casino. (laughs) I just love that statement.

Novak Djokovic said in his post-match interview

Both Djokovic and Medvedev are known for their confidence and eloquence on the ATP tour. Medvedev, however, often grabs headlines with his on-court antics. During his match against Samrej, he smashed the net camera with his racket in frustration.

Djokovic has faced his own challenges in the tournament so far, dropping sets against Faria and Nishesh Basavareddy. The Serbian star is expected to face Carlos Alcaraz in a highly-anticipated Australian Open quarterfinal.

Novak Djokovic shows grit in Australian Open second round

For the second time in this year’s Australian Open, Novak Djokovic had to play four sets to win against a Grand Slam newcomer. After defeating 19-year-old Nishesh Basavareddy in the first round, the Serbian faced 21-year-old Jaime Faria in the second round. He won 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday. Djokovic is aiming for his 25th Grand Slam title and 100th tour-level trophy.

Similar to his match against Basavareddy, Djokovic was tested by his younger opponent. He started strong, winning the first set and taking an early lead in the second. However, Faria fought back and won four games in a row. The Portuguese qualifier took the second set by playing aggressive tennis, using his serve and forehand to great effect.

With advice from his coach, Andy Murray, to play more offensively, Djokovic regained control of the match. He dominated the next two sets, facing only one breakpoint. His strong serving, winning 90% of first-serve points in the final sets, helped him secure the victory.

In the third round, Djokovic will face 26th-seed Tomas Machac from the Czech Republic. They have played twice before, each winning once. Their last match was in 2024, where Machac defeated Djokovic in Geneva. Both past matches were close, going to three sets.
