Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic is mightily impressed with Carlos Alcaraz as he heaped praise on the Spaniard for his performance across different courts. As the 21-year-old is into the second Wimbledon final of his career and is set to face the seven-time Wimbledon Champion Djokovic for a second consecutive year, the Serbian lauded Alcaraz.
The 37-year-old claimed to see a lot of similarities between him and three-time Grand Slam champion. Djokovic pointed out the adaptability Alcaraz has shown so early in his career and claimed that the Spaniard has the capability to perform equally well across different surfaces.
I see a lot of similarities between me and him in terms of ability to adapt and adjust to the surface. I think that's probably his biggest trait, is that he's got skills to play equally well on any surface and to adapt to a given opponent that particular day.Novak Djokovic said about Carlos Alcaraz after his semifinal win at the 2024 Wimbledon
As Alcaraz recently became one of the youngest players to clinch a Grand Slam title on all three surfaces—hard court, clay, and grass—Djokovic lauded this trait shown by the youngster. The Serbian then claimed that Alcaraz is exhibiting a similar level of adaptability to his own.
Novak Djokovic floored after seeing Carlos Alcaraz’s game on grass
Novak Djokovic talked in detail about Carlos Alcaraz‘s growth as a player, especially on the grass courts. The 24-time Grand Slam champion seemed massively impressed with the way Alcaraz has managed to grow his game on the grass courts, despite playing on clay courts for most of his early career.
Djokovic said that Alcaraz’s success on hard courts and clay courts was not surprising to him. However, the way the Spaniard has performed on grass courts has left him baffled. Djokovic mentioned the 21-year-old’s back-to-back title wins at Queen’s and Wimbledon last year to illustrate his point.
He surprised I think all of us last year the way he played in Queen's and Wimbledon, which he won back-to-back. You would think that for someone growing up in Spain, as he did, the way he's playing, clay court, Grand Slam wins, which happened this year at Roland Garros, and US Open a few years ago was maybe not as surprising as Wimbledon. But the way he has moved, played the past couple of years on grass has been terrific to watch.Novak Djokovic said via ATP Tour
Alcaraz has lost only three matches out of 26 played on grass courts. The Spaniard has a career win/loss ratio of 0.88 on grass, his best among all surfaces. The 21-year-old will be focused on further improving his record as he prepares to meet Djokovic in the 2024 Wimbledon final.
Meanwhile, the Serbian will have his defeat to Alcaraz last year in mind when he takes Centre Court on Sunday. Additionally, a record-equaling eighth title will be on Djokovic’s mind during the title clash at the All-England Club.
