Novak Djokovic blamed the Philippe-Chatrier court for the painful slip during his fourth-round clash with Francisco Cerundolo on June 3. Although he overcame the Argentine 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, he was angry at the organizers when his request of sweeping the court was turned down.
Djokovic said he had been dealing with a slight knee niggle way before his Roland Garros campaign though it was not serious at all, but slipping on the court made it worse. After the match, he expressed his anger at the organizers for not doing anything about the slippery court.
I slipped a lot. Everyone slides on clay, that's for sure. But I slipped too many times. It's unusual. I discussed with the chair umpire, saying: “Would it be possible to sweep the field, maybe not at every change, but maybe when we change sides, every two or three times? And maybe not wait for the end of a set.” She said she would check, and she spoke to the supervisor of the people who take care of the grounds. The answer was no.Novak Djokovic said at the press conference
He took a medical timeout and when the effect of the medications kicked in, he was able to play without much pain. Though the doctors, after the match, gave some positive news, there were signs of concerns, but he felt he was physically fine.
Novak Djokovic unsure if he will be able to play quarterfinal against Casper Ruud
Due to the knee trouble, Novak Djokovic said he was unsure whether he would be able to show up for his quarterfinal clash with Casper Ruud. The match is on June 5 and Djokovic is glad that there is a gap of one day during Grand Slam matches which will help him heal more.
I don’t know what will happen these two days. If I’ll be able to step out on the court and play. I hope so.Novak Djokovic said at the press conference
Djokovic is not enjoying a smooth run at Roland Garros because he played two difficult five-setters, which has concerned his supporters about whether he would be able to pull off another victory against Ruud, who is also a two-time Roland Garros finalist. It was last year, Ruud made it to his second final in Paris only to get beaten by the Serb in straight sets.
