Even Novak Djokovic succumbed to extreme conditions in Shanghai while he was locking horns with Yannick Hanfmann in the third round on Sunday (October 5). Djokovic came from a set down to knock out the German after battling an illness, in two hours and 45 minutes (also his second-longest best-of-three match of the season).

Hours after the match, a clip of Djokovic throwing up mid-match in the second set emerged on the internet. In that clip, the Serb could be seen vomiting twice.

Here’s the video:

Later, Djokovic called the conditions “brutal and said that he had to “weather the storm” because, apart from the weather, Hanfmann was giving him tough competition. After throwing up on the court, the 38-year-old dug deep and tried to end the match quickly.

Djokovic, a record four-time Shanghai Masters champion, said after his opening-round match that conditions in Shanghai this year are far worse compared to his previous appearances. Had he lost, Hanfmann, the No.150 player, would have become the lowest-ranked player to defeat Djokovic in a Masters 1000 tournament.

It was Djokovic’s second win over Hanfmann in as many matches, with the first coming in the fourth round of last year’s Geneva Open. The former World No.45 has yet to clinch his career’s first singles title.

Life on the court is easier or more difficult if you’re serving good or bad. The first couple of matches here, I must say that probably stands out as the best shot in my game. It makes a difference, you know. It made a difference for him. He broke my serve early in the first, and he held his serve comfortably all the way until the end of the second. So even though the courts are slower than they were last year, and the balls as well.

Novak Djokovic said at the press conference

Djokovic will next be locking horns with Jaume Munar, who went past Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka. He has met the Spaniard just once- in the second round of the 2018 Roland Garros and won it in straight sets.

But if you’re hitting your spots well with the serve, it’s tough, it’s tough to break serve. I’m really glad with the way I’m serving. ‘I need to improve my game overall from the baseline. I know what needs to be better, and hopefully it will be in the next round already.

Djokovic was the runner-up in Shanghai last year, losing the final in straight sets to World No.2 Jannik Sinner, who withdrew from the tournament after suffering an injury during his third-round match against Tallon Griekspoor. Djokovic would have met the four-time Grand Slam champion had they both reached the semifinals.

Djokovic, a record 40-time Masters 1000 champion, last won a title in this category at the 2023 Paris Masters by beating Grigor Dimitrov. Since then, twice he reached the final- in last year’s Shanghai Masters and in this year’s Miami Open. In Miami, Djokovic was denied the title by Jakub Mensik.

The only title that Djokovic won this year was the Geneva Open- also his 100th singles trophy of his career, making him only the third man after Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer to reach the tally in the Open Era. Djokovic played the semifinals of all four Majors this year, but the last Big Title that he won was the 2024 Paris Olympics gold medal by beating Carlos Alcaraz.
