Novak Djokovic was not at his best when he played Alexei Popyrin in the third round of the 2024 US Open at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on August 30. Losing the match with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, Djokovic failed to advance to the fourth round of the US Open for the first time in 18 years. After the match, Djokovic took to X and said that he would move on and look forward to his next tournament.

Djokovic played at the US Open without any match practice on the North American hard court swing, for he chose to skip the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open after grueling weeks in Paris for the Olympics. At the press conference after the exit, Djokovic admitted that he spent a lot of energy on winning the Olympic gold medal, and from the very beginning at the US Open, he was not playing to his full potential. Now that he has been finally eliminated, Djokovic will be recharging his batteries before arriving at another tournament.

It wasn’t meant to be tonight. Well played, @AlexeiPopyrin99. Time for me to relax, regroup and move on. Until next time, NYC.

For the first time since 2017, Djokovic crashed out of the Grand Slams without winning one title in a season. This year has been exactly the opposite of his campaign last year, where he won three majors, except the Wimbledon, which he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Djokovic reached his first Grand Slam final of this year at the SW19 but once again lost to Alcaraz.

Honestly, with the way I felt and played from the start of the tournament, reaching the third round is a success. I played some of the worst tennis I've ever played, serving by far some of the worst ever.
Novak Djokovic said after the match

Popyrin registered his first victory over Djokovic in four meetings. Prior to the US Open, they clashed at this year’s Australian Open and Wimbledon. The 25-year-old Aussie will next face home favorite Frances Tiafoe in the fourth round.
