World No. 2 Novak Djokovic progressed to the medal rounds of the Paris Olympics on Thursday (August 1) with a straight-sets win over Stefanos Tsitsipas. However, old injury issues seemed to have resurfaced for the Serb.
Djokovic was down 1-4 in the second set when he called the physios to treat his knee. It is the same knee that underwent meniscus surgery earlier in June. The former World No. 1 was asked about it in the press conference and gave a concerning update.
I am very worried, honestly, I don’t know what to say. I finished the match, and the intense pain went away. Whether I hit myself or slipped, I don’t even know. It all resembled the 4th round of Roland Garros where I managed to finish the match, and then I found out I was injured. I am pleased with the victory, but I am worried.Novak Djokovic said in the post-match press conference
Djokovic will play Lorenzo Musetti on Friday in a bid to reach his first Olympic gold medal match. Ironically, it was his match against the Italian at Roland Garros two months ago that highlighted his knee issues for the first time.
Even if he says it’s not okay, I’ll probably get on the court and give it a try. These are very rare chances, to fight for a medal for my country, so I’m going to do everything possible in the next 24 hours to put myself in a position to fight for a medal for Serbia.Novak Djokovic added

The Serbian worsened his knee injury in the following match against Francisco Cerundolo before withdrawing from the quarterfinal. It remains to be seen if he will be fit for his semifinal against Musetti.
Novak Djokovic delivered an empathetic win against Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the Olympic medal rounds
24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic edged closer to winning his first gold medal at the Paris Olympics on Thursday (August 1). He secured a tough 6-3, 7-6(3) win over Stefanos Tsitsipas. The match was challenging, especially in the second set.
The 37-year-old was down 2-5 in the second set but managed to make a comeback. Djokovic saved three set points while also moving carefully due to his knee. He showed great resilience, especially on crucial points.
This victory extends Djokovic’s lead over Tsitsipas to 12-2 in their career matchups. It was their first encounter since the 2023 Australian Open final.
Djokovic has now reached the medal rounds for the fourth time in his career at the Games. However, he has only produced a bronze medal in either of his previous three attempts.
