Noval Djokovic has been chasing the Olympic goal medal all his life. His yearning for it only increased when he won the bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Games. His long wait finally ended at the Paris Olympics, as the Serbian got his hands on the elusive gold.
On a sunny day at Roland Garros, Djokovic took on Carlos Alcaraz with the top step of the podium on the line. With one of his best performances of the season, he beat the Spaniard 7-6(3), 7-6(2) on Court Philippe-Chatrier to emerge victorious.
There were doubts about his abilities heading into the match. He had not won a title since the start of the year and lost in straight sets to Alcaraz in the Wimbledon title match, which was the only final he had reached all season.
Both players gave it their all on the red dirt. The first set had 13 break points (Djokovic five and Alcaraz 8) and yet the set went into a tie-break without a break of serve. The second set also needed a tie-break to be settled, such was the quality of tennis on display. However, when it mattered, Djokovic came out on top in both sets to get his hands on the gold medal.
The 37-year-old has always been proud to represent his country on the international stage, and his celebration after the Olympic victory just underlined those emotions. With 24 Grand Slam titles to his name, he is already considered the greatest athlete in Serbia, and the Paris gold further cemented that status.
To celebrate the new addition to his trophy cabinet, a huge billboard was recently put up in Belgrade to celebrate his GOAT (Great Of All Time) status. Here’s the video:
