Novak and Stefan have been together in training for the last few seasons now. The former World No. 1 has even said that it wouldn’t be a surprise if his son plays at Wimbledon one day.
It would be a monumental achievement if Stefan could make it to Wimbledon, let alone reach the heights that his father has for the majority of his career. However, the tennis world can safely say that he is in the right company and following the right person.
Novak Djokovic passes Alexei Popyrin test at Wimbledon
Seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic faced a tough challenge from Alexei Popyrin in the third round at Wimbledon. The Australian’s powerful serves and aggressive play pushed Djokovic, but the second seed found his rhythm when it mattered most. Despite losing the first set, Djokovic raised his game, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(3) to advance to the next round.
This was the second time this year that Popyrin, who is ranked #47 by the ATP, tested Djokovic in a major tournament, the first being at the Australian Open. The Serbian responded well to losing the opening set, focusing on his serve and baseline game. During the match, Djokovic also achieved a milestone by hitting over 1000 aces at Wimbledon.
In an amusing moment during the match, the crowd cheered loudly as England won a penalty shootout in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals. Djokovic playfully mimicked taking a penalty shot, while Popyrin jokingly acted as a goalie. Despite the distractions, the 37-year-old maintained his focus, eventually dominating the match and securing victory after three hours and five minutes of intense play.
With this win, Djokovic reached the fourth round at Wimbledon for the 16th time, tying Jimmy Connors for the second-most last-16 appearances in the Open Era at this tournament. Only Roger Federer, with 18 appearances, has more.
