Novak Djokovic has arguably become the greatest player of all time in tennis history, with a record 24 Grand Slam titles to his name. However, before rising to become a phenomenal icon in the sport, he won his first title three years after turning pro.

However, it was his then-girlfriend and now wife, Jelena Djokovic, who turned emotional seeing the Serbian win the 2006 Amersfoort title.

For context, Djokovic turned pro in 2003, after forfeiting school to be a tennis player. The Serbian was outside the Top 100 in his first season but was already at No. 67 after two years. He had his first breakthrough in the ATP in 2006, aged 19, when he reached the quarterfinals of Roland Garros and in the fourth round of Wimbledon.

In July of that same year, he won his first title on Tour despite being ranked No. 36. He defeated former Olympic champion Nicolas Massu, from Chile, 7-6, 6-4 in the final Amersfoort Open in the Netherlands.

It was his first career final, but there was someone else who was even more happy and proud of the current World No. 1. Jelena, his girlfriend (now wife), was there to witness his rise, capturing his victory with a small camera.

When Djokovic was asked how he felt about winning his first career title, he revealed that he was hoping it was the first step to more titles in his career.

I don't feel anything special. Like you said, it's my first title and I'm really happy that I made it here in Holland. In front of these great crowd and I just hope that this will be the first step in my career. And I hope that I will win much more tournaments.
Novak Djokovic said during the on-coury interview.

The couple tied the knot weeks after Djokovic won his second major title at 2014 Wimbledon. They now have two children: Stefan, a boy, and Tara, a girl.

Just after Amersfoort, he won his second title in Metz and won two Masters 1000 titles the following year. He went on to reach the semifinals of Roland Garros and Wimbledon, losing to Rafael Nadal on both occasions.

The 36-year-old’s first Grand Slam title came at the 2008 Australian Open; at just 21, he defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6. He has now won a total of 98 single career titles, 24 Grand Slams, 40 Masters 1000 crowns, and seven ATP Finals.

Besides that, 18 years later, Djokovic is still competing at the highest level. He has been to two semifinals this season.
