Under Gareth Southgate, England’s soccer team has now reached the semi-finals of a major tournament three times in four attempts. This win marks only the second time England has won a penalty shootout in the European Championship, the last being against Spain in Euro 96.
Despite the celebration, England’s focus will quickly shift to preparing for the semi-finals against the Netherlands, who defeated Turkey 2-1 to secure their spot in the last four of Euro 2024.
Novak Djokovic sets up a clash with Holger Rune in the Wimbledon fourth round
Second seed Novak Djokovic faced a tough challenge at Wimbledon, but he managed to overcome Alexei Popyrin in four sets during the third round. The match lasted three hours and five minutes on Centre Court at the All England Club.
Djokovic lost the first set but didn’t allow Popyrin to break his serve again, ultimately winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(3) to advance to the round of 16 where he will face 15th seed Holger Rune. The Danish star earned his spot against Djokovic with a hard-fought victory over Quentin Halys. After a difficult start on Court 18, the match was moved to No. 1 Court due to rain, where Rune turned the tide in his favor.
Despite being two sets down, the Danish player staged a comeback to win 1-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-1. This marked his first career win after being two sets behind, bringing his record in five-set matches to 4-3, with a 2-1 record this year.
At just 21 years old, Rune has claimed two significant victories over Djokovic in their career meetings, although the former World No.1 still leads their head-to-head series 3-2. Rune notably defeated Djokovic in the final of the 2022 Rolex Paris Masters. His latest win sets up an intriguing clash with the Belgrade native at Wimbledon, where the Serbian will seek to continue his quest for a 25th Grand Slam title.
