The New York Mets continue to tumble. On Sunday, the team suffered a 3-2 loss against the Washington Nationals which left them out of a playoff position for the first time since April 5th. This lead to some furious reactions from MLB fans on social media.

The Mets have suffered one of the worst slumps in their history this season. After being 45-24 in June (the best record in the league at that point), the team has imploded.

Last Sunday, the New York side snapped an 8-game losing run following a walk-off home run from Pete Alonso. His 3-run shot in the 10th inning led his side to a 5-2 win over the Texas Rangers and helped them to avoid the sweep.

After this, the Mets took 2 out of the 3 games against playoff-chasing San Diego Padres and then defeated the Nationals 12-6 on Friday to make it 3 wins out of their previous 4 games.

On Saturday, they fell 5-3 in extra innings, making the showdown on Sunday a rubber game. After two fantastic grabs from Jacob Young robbed the Mets, the NL East side made some defensive errors. Stars Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso both committed mistakes in the early innings.

Cedric Mullins would then make a massive baserunning error. Starting pitcher Sean Manaea ended up giving up 3 runs. The offense of the Mets was able to produce just 2 runs against one of the worst pitching teams this season. The 3-2 loss on Sunday left them with an 80-76 record.

The Cincinnati Reds meanwhile, completed a 4-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs. The Reds also have an 80-76 record. However, they own the tiebreaker over the Mets. This led to them moving into the final Wild Card spot and leaving the Mets out of playoff position.

Social media reacts to NY Mets losing control of postseason position

The New York Mets no longer have control over their playoff destiny in their hands. Following their 11th loss in the last 15 games, the 2-time World Series winners now have to depend on other results to make it to the postseason.

After having such a great start to the campaign, where few would have imagined the Mets to be in this position heading into the final regular week of the 2025 season. Fans on social media have been angry with the performance of the team in the past 3 months.

Following their loss on Sunday, many slammed the team. Some urged a change in the team leadership and front office. Meanwhile, one user wrote, “Nightmare of a season,” while making their feelings known. Check out that and some other reactions from X below:

The Mets’ final six games will be on the road. They will first take on the Chicago Cubs before traveling to Miami to take on the Miami Marlins.

Francisco Lindor comments on Mets’ falling out of playoff position with 6 games remaining

The New York Mets have found themselves in an uncomfortable position. With just 6 more games remaining, they have fallen out of the playoff spot. Their shortstop, Francisco Lindor, would make some strong comments regarding this slump after the game on Sunday.

While speaking to the reporters, the 5-time MLB All-Star acknowledged the team’s poor play and took responsibility for their current situation. He later expressed that all comes down to winning games for them from here on.

It comes down to winning. We’ve put ourselves in this position, so we’ve got to find a way to get out of it. And that comes down to winning. We just got to win ballgames.

Francisco Lindor said as per SNY

Meanwhile, manager Carlos Mendoza is confident about his team and believes they are “one hit away” from turning things around. The Reds, on the other hand, will take on the Pittsburgh Pirates before closing down the season against the Milwaukee Brewers, who own the best record in the league.
