The New York Mets have become a trending topic in sports conversations after they flexed their financial muscles to land superstar Juan Soto. While the 15-year, $765 million deal is yet to be officially announced, team GM David Stearns has expressed his desire to bring back Pete Alonso.
Just like Soto, the four-time MLB All-Star became a free agent this offseason. Alonso has been a standout name for the Mets in recent years and has been one of the top offensive stars in the league.
In the 2024 season, Alonso once again crossed the 30 home run mark as he slammed 34 home runs. On top of that, he batted in 88 runs as he helped the Mets to reach the National League Championship Series (NLCS).
Apart from that, he has become a fan favorite in Queens. As per reports, he is expected to land the biggest contract ever for a first baseman. Speaking on his future during the Winters Meeting, Stearns said he would “love” to have the two-time Home Run Derby champion back in the team.

Stearns further added that the Mets have the resources to go all out and sign the 30-year-old slugger. Apart from the Soto deal, the Mets have also landed pitchers Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas.
This move came after three pitchers – Jose Quintana, Sean Manaea, and Luis Severino all became free agents. Since then Severino has gone on to pen down the largest deal in Athletics history with a 3-year $67 million move.
Pete Alonso reportedly not on radar of New York Yankees
The loss of Juan Soto to their cross-town rivals, New York Mets, has left a huge void in the New York Yankees lineup. Even before Soto signed the deal, there had been speculations regarding the Yankees making a potential move for Pete Alonso. That, though, does not seem to be the case now.
As per MLB insider Mark Feinsand, Alonso is not on the radar of the Yankees. Feinsand has cited the Yankees to be looking at Christian Walker, Nolan Arenado, Cody Bellinger, and Kyle Tucker as possible free agents.
As per Yankees GM Brian Cashman, the team does have a Plan B after failing to secure the services of Soto again. However, it appears that Alonso is not a part of this plan at the moment.

Former MLB GM Dan O’Dowd has suggested the Yankees spend their resources on four players. The 65-year-old, who now works as an analyst, urged them to sign Walker, get in trade talks with Arenado and Bellinger, and then sign Jurickson Profar.
The Yankees on Tuesday picked up ace pitcher Max Fried on an 8-year $218 million deal. He will now be part of a rotation that consists of Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Nestor Cortes, and Luis Gil.
